Unemployment in Upstate New York has been an issue during the recession. In some cities, the problem is starting to be reversed. In other towns, job creation has remained a problem.
The Buffalo-Niagara region has seen a recent spike in job growth. Samantha Maziarz Christmann of The Buffalo News wrote about the region’s addition of jobs in July.
That does not mean things in Buffalo are are automatically better. David Robinson of The Buffalo News recently discussed how things are getting better but are still bad in Buffalo. The city’s income growth stands favorably against other Upstate New York cities.
Rochester, another Western New York city, also faired well job growth during the summer. As Diana Louise Carter discussed, Rochester led New York in job growth. This was due to the increase in private sector jobs in Rochester.
Meanwhile, Albany has seen an unexpected influx of green jobs. Wendy Kaufman of NPR discussed the unexpected increase of green jobs in the capitol city.
But the state struggles as a whole. A study by the Fiscal Policy Institute showed that 1.4 million New Yorkers are unemployed or underemployed. Brian Tumulty showed that New York needed to add 512,000 jobs to reach its pre-recession status.
